He was born on September 27, 1696 in Naples from the noble De ‘Liguori family. He received from his good parents a holy and energetic upbringing, to which little Alfonso did not fail to correspond, keeping a special predilection and a lively feeling of gratitude towards his mother throughout his life.

With a careful and tireless study he obtained a law degree at the age of sixteen. After having practiced his profession with brilliant success for several years, for an involuntary mistake in dealing with my case in court, he was so shocked that he decided to leave the world to follow the voice of God calling him to the priesthood.

Having become a priest, he practiced popular preaching and teaching catechism. To all of them he addressed his simple, charitable word, without refinement. To preach the gospel to the poor, in 1732 he founded the Order of the Redemptorists in Scala, near Amalficurrently spread throughout Europe, America and other parts of the world.
