Vatican trial, the Pope releases Cardinal Becciu from secrecy. Open dossier on CEI funds in Sardinia

Vatican trial – “Pope francesco dispenses the cardinal Angelo Becciu from the pontifical secret “. This is what the cardinal secretary of state said, Pietro Parolinin a letter addressed to the President of the Vatican Tribunal, Giuseppe Pignatone. During the first part of his interrogation in the trial on the financial investments of the Secretariat of State in which he is accused, Becciu had stated that he wanted to “confirm the papal secrecy” regarding some accusations, in particular, that of embezzlement in competition with the manager Cecilia Marogna. The cardinal said, however, “willing to accept what will be decided by the competent authorities”. Hence Pignatone’s request to Cardinal Parolin who forwarded Bergoglio’s decision to the Tribunal.

On 7 April Becciu will be able to answer all the accusations that have been made against him. The Pope’s decision was made known at the beginning of the eleventh audience of the trial that is taking place in the Vatican. Hearing entirely dedicated to the interrogation of the other ecclesiastical accused in the proceedings: monsignor Mauro Carlino who worked for a long time in the Secretariat of State.

In the courtroom, Pignatone also reported that the adjunct promoter of justice, Alessandro Diddi, opened a further proceeding on the financing of the CEI to the diocese of Ozieri, in Sardinia. For other funding to the same body and to the Cooperative Spes, the operational arm of the diocesan Caritas legally represented by the brother of the cardinal, Antonino, Cardinal Becciu is under accusation in the process already underway.

“I did not lift a finger without having the authorization of the superiors,” Monsignor Carlino explained to the magistrates, referring in particular to the period in which he was secretary of the substitute of the Secretariat of State, Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra. “Of everything that was happening – added the priest – I constantly informed both the secretary of state and the Holy Father. He amazed me that he was indicted.

The substitute asked me for fidelity, obedience, and confidentiality. I could not do anything else. After a few months, I found this mess. I didn’t know about the London building until January 2019 when Monsignor Peña Parra told me that there was a problem due to a great mistake of the Administrative Office of the Secretariat of State of which I was not a member ”.

The error explained Monsignor Carlino, “concerned a thousand shares with voting rights left to Gianluigi Torzi with which he could continue to manage the building even after the purchase by the Secretariat of State. The Pope’s will was to spend as little as possible to return possession of the building ”. Carlino also specified that his role was simply to maintain relations with the broker, adding that the substitute told him that Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, the key witness of the Vatican prosecutors, “had shown himself unfaithful and disobedient.

The contracts on the London palace were signed by Monsignor Perlasca without the ok of the superior: here was the great infidelity ”. Regarding the outcome of the negotiations with Torzi, Monsignor Carlino announced that it was decided by the substitute to pay 15 million euros to close the relationship with the broker and thus bring the Secretariat of State back into full ownership of the London building. Finally, the priest specified a goal, which was celebrated with a dinner offered by the substitute in the name of the Pope.
